Regarding the HP/EDS layoffs, it will be mishandled like it always has over the last ten years since they first started 'cost-reductions'. Essentially what happens is that leadership learns in advance and starts reassigning each other with technical job codes. This includes totally unqualifed, favorite (and usually very attractive) secretaries (that they call 'administrative assistants). Then when the axe drops, they fire the brilliant technical folks and slide the 'newly acquired' technical people into the displaced technical positions. The customer suffers the most because now the systems are staffed with unqualifed individuals. They keep a couple of really sharp people around to prevent the ship from sinking. It looks good on paper, but believe me the quality suffers immensely. I really hope HP is smart enough to stop this deceptive 'good-ole-boy' system from recurring. EDS really is a poorly-run company that abuses highly-skilled technical resources. For the record, there are some really, really sharp people in EDS. The problem is that they don't last too long because of the bullcrap that EDS dishes out.
